Insider launched the Stay Insider Sessions to connect with musicians while they, like many of us, are grappling with isolation and unprecedented downtime. Next up: JoJo.

JoJo is sitting composedly on the carpeted floor in her Los Angeles home, pondering a concept I think about fairly often — but a concept that, I imagine, is far more complex for someone who has been famous since she was a tween.

How are you different, I asked, from the person your adolescent self thought you’d be in your late 20s?

“I think I’m more spiritual than I ever considered being,” she decides. “And I thought I would have a lot more money.”

“I always dreamed of this moment in time where women are much more in the driver’s seat.”

It’s been four years since JoJo released her comeback album Mad Love, and no, she wasn’t “sleeping” on her fans or using the time to relax by the pool with an Aperol Spritz (although she’d love to be doing that right now, and same).

Since 2016, the superstar has flip-flopped between labels, embarked on several worldwide tours, purchased a new home and ended a relationship after ‘cheating’ on her boyfriend, as well as some other “dumb shit”. Let her live!

She fuelled said “dumb shit” into writing sessions for her strongest body of work so far, Good to Know, a nine-track collection of smooth and intricate R&B numbers about empowerment and self-worth.

“This album is wanting to escape yourself but then not being able to, and then realising how important it is to find comfort in being on your own and finding strength in that,” she tells Gay Times.

When you speak to JoJo, or even just watch her on Instagram, you can feel how much she loves the physical act of singing. Vocal riffs are not just strings of notes; she’s expressing herself to you. She shares her voice with her fans almost every day on Instagram around noon (PST), when she goes live to talk, sing with guests, and unpack her new album, Good to Know.

“I think that energy exchange is important,” she tells Teen Vogue on a phone call weeks into California’s mandated social distancing. She misses in-person experiences, but that’s the reality of album rollout in the age of COVID-19. And she won’t let this new normal bring her down, either. “To feel the music and hear someone sing live is a powerful thing.”

JoJo is opening up about her mental health and her family’s struggle with addiction.

In the new issue of PEOPLE, the singer reveals she was diagnosed with clinical depression, or major depressive disorder, 10 years ago and that she’s been going to therapy and taking antidepressants since she was 18.

“Because there is a history of mental health issues in my family, I didn’t feel any shame seeking help,” says the singer, whose mental health journey influenced her new album, Good to Know, out Friday. “Those of us who have a predisposition toward depression or a chemical imbalance — sometimes we just need a little help.”

In 2004, a 13-year-old girl in a tank top declaring “Boys Stink” burst onto the scene with “Leave (Get Out),” an irresistibly catchy pop-R&B hybrid track about a cheating boyfriend. The Foxborough, Massachusetts, native born Joanna Noëlle Levesque had transformed into JoJo: a brash barely-teenager with the vocals of a much older singer, and the youngest female solo artist in history to top the Billboard Pop Songs charts.

JoJo’s applying mascara as she FaceTimes with one eye open. We were supposed to meet in person to discuss her new album, Good To Know, but the spread of COVID-19 forced us online. “Girl, if I wasn’t on a virtual promo tour, I wouldn’t [be putting on makeup],” she laughs.

The fact she’s even on a promo tour isn’t something JoJo, born Joanna Noëlle Levesque, takes for granted. Her 2004 debut single, “Leave (Get Out),” released when she was just 13, went viral before going viral was truly a thing, making her the youngest solo artist in history to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart. But then things got complicated.

“There are things that just cannot be taken away from me,” says JoJo. “And that’s my history, my voice, my spirit.”

Over the years, that’s exactly what the pop star has reinforced, though her approach—always using her voice, her spirit—took a lot of strength and resilience. In an age in which seemingly everything is available at the tap of a finger, JoJo’s first two albums remained absent from the world, as if lost in a patch of quicksand in the music streaming universe. And while dedicated fans of the 28-year-old pop star’s 2004 debut, JoJo, and 2006 followup The High Road, certainly felt their absence, the voice behind them, unable to share her music with the world, felt that loss more deeply.

Throughout JoJo’s journey as an artist she has been discovering little truths about herself that have lead her to having a strong relationship with her fans. Forever speaking her truth, she has been fully transparent through every release and tour she’s done.

Her third studio album ‘Mad Love’ was a triumphant return to the spotlight in 2016 and saw her finding a whole new confidence inside of her that was sexy and honest. Through the angsty messaging of ‘Fuck Apologies’ and ‘FAB.’ to the rhythmically seductive vibes of ‘Edibles’ and ‘Like This’, she boldly delivered a mature RNB sound that was met with critical acclaim.

JoJo is opening up about her journey to self-love! The 29-year-old musician sat down with Access Hollywood’s Sibley Scoles to discuss her past trials and tribulations in the music industry and the upcoming release of her new album “Good to Know” on May 1. JoJo revealed that her latest single “Man” holds an empowering message for women and young girls. “It’s about being comfortable with yourself,” she explained. “Just feeling confident, a little cocky even.” She then went on to discuss her love life, admitting, “If I’m going to have a partnership with somebody one day, they’re going to have to be really freaking awesome because I know what I’m bringing to the table as a woman.”
